The Scenic II hatchback has achieved the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests, as have the latest Espace (the highest-scoring car yet), Laguna II and its sibling the Megane II. Standard kit, even on entry Authentique models, includes twin front and side airbags, side curtain 'bags, three-point seat-belts for all, seatbelt pretensioners on front and outer rear seats, three-point ISOFIX child seat mounting points on front passenger seat and outer rear seats, and ABS anti-lock brakes (absolutely essential) with EBD (electronic brakeforce distribution) and emergency brake assist to keep up the pressure. Security-wise, you get the keyless entry system with ignition card, deadlocks, an immobiliser and, on most models, a Thatcham Category 1 alarm. The Handling Pack option adds ESP (electronic stability programme), traction control, understeer control and tyre pressure monitoring.
